Analog Industries Filterizer, A VST effect plug-in by Audio Damage, Inc.
After messing up the step settings on Steinberg's StepFilter for the upteenth million time, I decided that there has to be a better way. Utilizing the Audio Damage DSP library, and spending an inordinate amount of company time, I came up with this little gadget, which fulfills the same functions as StepFilter, but is far more appropriate to my working environment.
Basically, it is a normal state-variable filter. The twist is that the filter frequency can be controlled by MIDI note number in addition to the normal knob-twisting action. You instansiate it as an insert effect (or send, if you feel daring), then assign a MIDI track to it the same way you would to, say, a VSTi or other MIDI-capable effect. You can then "play" the filter with your MIDI keyboard. After using it for a while, I added the "hang" button to the MIDI control section. If this is on, the filter stays at whatever the last MIDI note was. If it is off, the filter returns to the knob value as soon as the key is released. If you use it in this mode, you'll want to quantize the ends of the notes, as well, unless your timing is absolutely stellar.
If you have any questions about this plug-in, or ideas for features to improve it, drop me a line at chris@audiodamage.com and I'll endeavor to please. I have only tested it with Nuendo and Cubase on Windows and Macintosh. Your mileage may vary if you use a different host.

Other software I've designed
While I've released various bits here and there over the years, there are two full-scale commercial releases currently available that I either designed or contributed significantly to the design of. The first of these is the Mayhem package of effects for VST and RTAS, available from Audio Damage, Inc., which I created with Adam Schabtach. I'm very proud of this product, as the four plug-ins included with it represent many hours of work by Adam and I to bring to fruition.
At left, you see a screen-shot of Filterpod, which is a good example of the quirky UI designs I gravitate towards. Adam went above and beyond to try and turn my rather vague statements about what a low-pass filter should do in to DSP, and Filterpod is the result of our combined efforts. All four of the effects in Mayhem are unique in both sound and concept, and I'm very happy with the result. Pop on over to the Audio Damage page and download the demos.
The other current commercial package I had a hand in is the MODE set of plug-ins from Cycling '74. I worked on the design of these for several years with Darwin Grosse of C74; Adam came in later to help coerce the extremely balky back-end in to an operational suite of devices. Go have a look at the C74 page.
